What does your vegetable garden look like?

Create my own garden

A few pots, a small garden or several beds: choose what suits your space and time. These example gardens show how to get started.

Growing in raised beds

A garden you can keep track of

Make narrow beds you can reach from the path. Alternate leafy vegetables, roots and fruiting crops and give beans an arch to climb.

  • Beds accessible from two sides
  • Height for beans, room for courgettes
  • Flowers along the edges

A small city garden

Plenty to discover in a small space

Even a few beds and pots can give a varied harvest. Combine quick-to-harvest lettuce with vegetables that stay longer and use a sunny wall for support.

  • Small beds with clear paths
  • A climbing frame against the wall
  • Pots in a warm, bright spot

A balcony vegetable garden

Your first harvest starts in a pot

Start with a few large pots with drainage holes. Choose a compact tomato, chard or cut-and-come-again lettuce and keep herbs close to the kitchen. On warm days, check that the potting compost is moist enough.

  • Choose compact varieties
  • Give each plant enough pot space
  • Keep walking space and drainage clear
