Germination: about 18 °C. After emergence, plenty of light and protection from cold.
After emergence
Give seedlings light immediately after emergence. A dark loft needs suitable grow lights; warmth alone is insufficient. Ventilate and keep the compost moist without saturating it.
Pricking out and potting on
Prick out once the first true leaves are manageable. Hold a seedling by a leaf. Pot on when the roots fill the root ball.
Hardening off and planting out
Gradually acclimatise indoor-raised plants to sun, wind and outdoor temperatures; shelter them again on cold nights. A heated greenhouse can be earlier; an unheated greenhouse only when frost-free and warm enough. Outdoors after the last frost, often late May or June.

Match the start to the final position. A large plant needing to stay indoors in insufficient light for weeks gets no better start.

A cordon tomato along a stake

A single main stem is manageable and keeps the harvest within reach. The tomato does not climb by itself: you loosely attach growth to its support.

  1. Choose an indeterminate variety offered for outdoor growing.
  2. Plant in a warm, sheltered position after frost risk and place a sturdy stake beside the rootball.
  3. Make soft, loose tying loops and remove young side shoots if training one stem.
  4. Add support points during growth and keep checking that loops do not constrict.

A compact, determinate variety produces plenty of branching within a limited height. Leave side branches and support heavy fruiting branches where needed.

Under glass, you can use height and protect the crop from rain. Ventilation and securely anchoring the string are part of this method.

  1. Attach a load-bearing string to a sturdy, suitable greenhouse structure.
  2. Plant in greenhouse soil or a large container and ensure roots can receive moisture.

What kind of tomato is Moneymaker?

Moneymaker is a classic salad tomato with medium red fruit. The RHS describes it for greenhouse and outdoor growing. Choose it for training a cordon: growth habit needs more attention than simply planting in soil.

Plan support and growing space

The British variety profile gives 1.5 to 2.5 metres height and 0.5 to 1 metre spread. Use these for position and support planning. They are references, not exact targets for your plant. Add support at planting out.

Train a main stem

Moneymaker is a cordon tomato, usually trained on a single main stem. Remove young sideshoots and tie in the stem. Check ties allow room each growth round. The cordon name mainly helps choose appropriate care.

From seed to a sturdy plant

Start indoors where you can provide warmth and enough light. The American university source counts back from the intended planting-out date rather than giving every garden the same sowing date. Gradually acclimatise young plants to outdoor air and sun before moving them outside permanently.

A calendar date is no frost guarantee

Plant outdoors only after frost risk has passed and soil has warmed. Local Dutch forecasts remain important: KNMI shows frost around or after the Ice Saints is possible. Unheated greenhouses also need night-temperature checks.

Water the root zone

Water evenly and check moisture reaches roots, rather than briefly wetting only the surface. Prefer watering soil to keep leaves drier. Pots need more frequent checks during warmth.

Assess the fruit, not just the date

Red fruit colour helps recognise this variety. Follow individual fruits' development when harvesting. Variety name alone fixes no yield or harvest day. Note planting date, site and conditions at first harvest for meaningful later seasonal comparisons.
