Thyme: varieties, growing and uses

Thyme gives a small, dry spot plenty of detail: tiny leaves, flowers for insects and an aroma that becomes strong only when touched. Choose an easy-to-cut shrubby form for the kitchen and a low creeper for the edge. Lemon or orange scents make comparing them even more interesting.

This image was created with AI from described plant characteristics and growing advice. It shows a possible situation and is not a photograph of a verified cultivar.

Use
Common thyme is earthy, sweetly spicy and peppery. Lemon thyme has a citrus character; orange-scented forms exist, but names and flavour strength must be checked for each plant.
Care
Full sun and excellent drainage. A pot is watered as needed but does not remain constantly wet.
Harvest and flowering
Snip young green tips. On bushy forms, accessible stems are more practical than on very low creeping plants.

Een laag bloeiende droge rand

A shrubby form in a herb pot

Thyme gives a small, dry spot plenty of detail: tiny leaves, flowers for insects and an aroma that becomes strong only when touched. Choose an easy-to-cut shrubby form for the kitchen and a low creeper for the edge. Lemon or orange scents make comparing them even more interesting.

For an identifiable harvesting spot with enough room for this growth habit.

  2. Plant young rooted specimens with room to spread.
  3. Keep weeds out of the young mat and allow the foliage to dry.

For a second growing position where you can compare shape, scent or harvesting rhythm.

How to create your own herb-growing space

From plant to kitchen

Plan the next harvest

Care, cutting and harvesting

Full sun and excellent drainage. A pot is watered as needed but does not remain constantly wet.

Laat levend groen over en vermijd kaal oud hout.
