Legal & privacy
SeedSteps provides public growing information for the Netherlands and Flanders and a personal gardening app. This information explains how your data is used.
Your account and garden data
You can sign in with ChatGPT or create your own account with email and password. My garden uses your account ID, name and email address to save your own data and control access. Your password is stored securely; the app cannot read the original password back.
When you register, you receive a single-use recovery code. Keep it private. After use or a password change, you receive a new code and earlier email sessions expire. A linked ChatGPT account also lets you change your password. Email recovery is not enabled in this version yet.
Your garden profile, beds, plants, tasks, records, photos and personal wishlist are stored by the hosting service. For personal requests, the server checks whether the garden or photo belongs to your account. A matching email address does not automatically link accounts.
Your personal wishlist
Your saved plants and varieties, personal notes and save date belong to your account. Other visitors cannot see this information. You can remove a wish and its note in Want to grow. Deleting a garden does not automatically delete your wish list.
What is the data used for?
Your account ID links your data to your garden. Your name and email address support sign-in and the account display. When you make changes, your name may appear as the author in the logbook. Your location, soil, plants and records are used for the garden features you have chosen.
The app sends no marketing emails and contains no built-in advertising trackers. Garden advice, growing times and rain rules do not determine legal or similarly significant decisions about you.
Storage on your device
Email sign-in uses a necessary session cookie that works for up to 30 days. Signing out revokes that session. My garden uses local storage for preferences and weather data, and a device cache for offline use and changes awaiting synchronisation. The service worker stores previously used app files. This storage supports the app’s operation.
Only remove local storage after pending changes have synced. Signing out clears the active user cache. Other open tabs then open the sign-in page.
Location and weather
The coordinates you set are used to retrieve weather information from Open-Meteo. You can choose a place; your device's exact location is not required. Weather values describe the surrounding area and do not measure moisture in an individual bed or the greenhouse climate.
For automatic rain checks, the app uses complete daily measurements from a nearby KNMI weather station where available. The station name, distance and latest measurement date appear with the check. The app downloads public monthly files; your coordinates are not sent to KNMI for this. A station measurement is not a measurement in your garden. Missing hours are not filled in as zero rainfall. Open-Meteo is used where coverage is unavailable.

Advice and images
Garden advice helps you assess your own plants and soil. Growth stages are estimates. Check actual conditions before watering, feeding or applying protection. Sources are accessible through the information icons.
The library contains illustrative AI species images and photos with source credits. They are not observations from your garden. See Photo sources under More for their origins.
My varieties and personal experiences
My varieties stores growing experiences you choose to enter for each plant and season, such as supplier, growing location, dates, yield, flavour, rating and linked photos from your garden. This data stays private within your account and is not added to public variety profiles.
You can edit experiences, export them by season and permanently delete them individually. Deleting an experience preserves the original plant and garden photos. An experience keeps the plant and variety names as they were when recorded, so your record remains useful if you later delete the plant or garden. Delete those experiences separately if you also want to erase that data.
Take your data with you or delete it
Under More, you can export your garden as JSON and your logbook as CSV. Manage your gardens under Gardens, location and soil. Photos and changes that have not synced yet must be saved first.
OpenAI manages your ChatGPT account. Deleting a garden does not delete your ChatGPT account.
Retention and your rights
Garden data, photos and restore points you create remain stored in the app until you delete the relevant garden. Use More → Gardens, location and soil → Delete this garden to remove this data and restore points from the app’s storage. The app also clears the active local garden cache. Other devices may still contain an old offline copy; remove the local app storage there too.
You can request access to, correction, deletion, restriction and a copy of your personal data. Where the relevant legal basis applies, you can object or withdraw consent. You can lodge a complaint with the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
More about your privacy rightsServices supporting the app
The app runs on Sites. The garden database uses Cloudflare D1; your own photos use Cloudflare R2. ChatGPT sign-in is managed by OpenAI. When you look up a place or retrieve weather data, Open-Meteo receives the place search term or coordinates. If you open an external source link, that website’s terms and privacy policy apply.
This version does not enable an OpenAI API for personal AI advice or speech transcription. This app does not send garden data or voice recordings to an AI API for those functions.
