Phacelia: varieties, growing and uses

A vacant strip need not stay bare. Phacelia tanacetifolia fills it with finely divided leaves and curled flower clusters where something new keeps opening. You can use the plant as a flower strip or temporary green manure. Decide that purpose in advance: a strip flowering for insects for a long time is cleared at a different point from green manure that must not spread seed.

Sow thinly in loose soil and water during establishment. Choose sun and a well-drained spot. Phacelia is not a legume and therefore does not fix nitrogen itself as clover does, for example.

Drie verschillende keuzes

Gewone Phacelia tanacetifolia geeft de bekende lila bloemtrosjes. Angelia is een daadwerkelijk benoemd ras van die groenbemester; het gaat daar vooral om gewasontwikkeling, niet om een compleet andere bloemkleur. Phacelia campanularia is een andere botanische soort, met duidelijke blauwe klokjes. Die laatste kies je als sierbloem en behandelt je niet alsof het dezelfde landbouwgroenbemester is.

Tijdelijk tussen twee teelten

Bekijk eerst wanneer het bed weer nodig is. Zaai niet vandaag een volle groenbemester als je over twee weken al kool wilt planten. Houd een rand vrij zodat je de groei kunt beoordelen en eenvoudig kunt knippen. Verwijder opslag tijdig wanneer je geen zaailingen tussen de volgende groenten wilt.

Een bloemenstrook met een eindpunt

Zet een kortere strook naast het pad in plaats van het hele bed over te nemen. De opgerolde bloemtrosjes zijn mooi om van dichtbij te volgen. Een tweede klein zaaisel kan de belangstelling over het seizoen verdelen. Laat de strook niet ongemerkt over aangrenzende lage groenten hangen; ruimte en licht blijven belangrijk.

Grond verbeteren zonder wonderbelofte

Groenbemesting levert organisch materiaal en helpt een tijdelijk leeg oppervlak bedekken. Het vervangt geen bodemonderzoek of evenwichtige voeding voor een volgende teelt. Laat het materiaal verteren en kijk naar de bodemstructuur voordat je plant. Schrijf in je tuinlogboek hoeveel tijd er tussen zaaien, knippen en de volgende groente zat; dat is nuttiger dan een vaste kalenderdatum voor iedere tuin.
