French marigold: varieties, growing and uses

A marigold can form a low golden edge around the vegetable garden, or grow tall with large, solid flower heads. Look beyond the familiar orange bedding plant. An open yellow flower beside a dark tomato or a group of large lemon-yellow blooms creates a very different garden look.

Choose shape before colour

Disco Yellow is een laag afrikaantje met een bereikbaar bloemhart. Tagetes erecta geeft veel grotere, gevulde bloemen en vraagt een plek waar die hoogte past. Golden Gem heeft fijner blad en talrijke kleine gele bloemen. Zet niet automatisch elk type op dezelfde afstand: de volwassen plant op het etiket is je uitgangspunt.

Een rand die je kunt verzorgen

Maak de rand smal genoeg om vanaf het pad te bereiken. Plaats afrikaantjes niet tussen pas gezaaide groente waar je later moet wieden zonder de zaailingen te herkennen. Plant bijvoorbeeld een eigen strook bij de ingang van het bed. Zo zie je dagelijks of er bloemen uitgebloeid zijn en blijft water geven overzichtelijk.

Use repetition

Drie groepjes van hetzelfde type geven rust tussen bladgroenten. Wil je veel kleur, combineer dan kleinbloemig geel met één opvallende grote oranje groep. Maak een foto op ooghoogte én van bovenaf. Op die tweede foto zie je of de bloemen voldoende ruimte krijgen of onbedoeld over het groentebed heen hangen.

Saving seed without surprises

Bewaar alleen rijp, droog zaad en noteer de ouderplant. Zaailingen hoeven bij kruising of hybride rassen niet dezelfde bloem te geven. Wil je volgend jaar exact dezelfde rand, koop dan hetzelfde benoemde ras opnieuw. Houd een paar hoofdjes apart voor zaad en knip de rest weg als doorbloei je belangrijkste doel is.
