A good start: warmth and light
Warm sowing can be done indoors or in a heated greenhouse. After germination, every seedling needs enough light. A dark attic needs grow lights. An unheated greenhouse can become very cold at night: measure the temperature and check the advice for your crop.

- Germination and temperature
- Beschut kiemen, daarna licht en niet te warm verder kweken.
- After emergence
- Zet zaailingen direct na opkomst licht. Een donkere zolder vraagt geschikte groeiverlichting; warmte alleen is onvoldoende. Ventileer en houd de grond vochtig, zonder haar te verzadigen.
- Pricking out and potting on
- Zaai in een diepe bak, modules of op een zaaibed. Laat planten doorgroeien tot ze stevig genoeg zijn om uit te planten.
- Hardening off and planting out
- Laat binnen opgekweekte planten geleidelijk aan zon, wind en buitentemperatuur wennen; zet ze bij koude nachten weer beschut. Plant stevige jonge prei uit, doorgaans in de late lente of zomer; oogsttype en ras bepalen de planning.
Zomer-, herfst- en winterprei volgen verschillende schema’s. Zaai niet alle prei in dezelfde maand.
