Sweet oranges versus the bitter Seville group. Tarocco is a blood orange; colour also depends on cool conditions.
Sweet orange as a container plant: Choose a sturdy pot with drainage holes. Plant without burying the root collar. Let the pot base drain freely. Water according to compost moisture and season.
Protected winter growing: Choose a light winter position before buying. Bring the pot inside before damaging cold. Check moisture and leaves for pests. Gradually readjust the plant to outdoor light in spring.
Keep a bright winter space available and check for sap-sucking insect pests.
A citrus pot brings scent, green leaves and fruit close to the terrace, but also needs a place for winter. Before buying, decide where the plant can stay in light, frost-free conditions. A heavy pot without a practical moving route can become a problem in autumn. Choose a container with drainage and do not leave the rootball in a trapped layer of water.
Observe the plant while moving and overwintering it. Water requirements change with temperature, light and growth. Check the potting compost rather than blindly continuing the summer watering routine. Feeding also belongs with active growth and the instructions for the chosen product. More fertiliser does not make a cool, dark winter position suitable.
Taste citrus in the way you intend to use it. Juice, acidity and scent matter with lemons and limes; kumquats, by contrast, are valued for their skin. A calamondin is not a small, sweet mandarin. Even ripe fruits may be distinctly acidic. Colour alone does not tell the whole story, and flowering and ripening need not fall neatly within one summer harvest period in a Dutch container.
Washington Navel: Named navel selection.
Tarocco: Blood orange; red colouring depends on climate.
