Flowers do not show where the harvest hangs

Arachis hypogaea is a leguminous crop with four-leaflet leaves and small yellow flowers. After flowering, so-called pegs grow towards the ground and develop pods there. This requires open, accessible soil near the plant. Do not place a hard sealed cover around the entire plant base. A pot makes the process easy to observe but must be wide enough for side branches and soil contact.

Compare types without promising a tropical climate

Spanish and Valencia are broad peanut market groups, not two locally tested cultivars. Valencia may have more seeds per pod; Spanish often has small seeds. An American production-region source describes the groups, but its sowing dates and yields cannot transfer directly to a Dutch greenhouse. Record warmth, flowers and pegs, trying a few plants first. Finding a well-formed pod and recognising growth already makes the trial instructive.

Scent, flavour and use

Edible ripe seeds give familiar nutty peanut flavour mainly after suitable preparation. These are market groups, not a guaranteed variety flavour ranking. Peanut is a major allergen; sowing seeds may also be treated and are not snacks.

Care, cutting and harvesting

Choose reliable untreated seed for growing. Provide plenty of warmth, light and light, well-drained soil that the peg-like stalks formed after flowering can enter. Do not move or hoe an established plant unnecessarily during that stage.

No ordinary pruning. Do not cut away healthy side branches where flowering and peg formation occur.

Follow ripening according to the chosen planting material and assess a few underground pods. Dry healthy harvested pods appropriately and process only food-suitable seeds. Mould or damp storage is not part of a usable stored harvest.
