Creamy tropical aroma, comparable to mango and banana.
This description applies to the species; a separate taste test of this cultivar has not been confirmed.
Pawpaw brings a tropical-tasting flavour to a tree you can follow in your garden. It is a long-term project with unusual flowers and soft fruit. Start with two demonstrably different selections, a permanent spot and a plan to observe pollination yourself.
Give a young plant some temporary shade; a mature tree needs sun for cropping. Moisture and an undamaged taproot are important; choose its permanent position from the outset.
Cross-pollination generally needed. Self-setting claims for Sunflower/Prima come from the nursery; a second cultivar remains a sensible choice.
A grafted tree preserves the chosen selection’s identity; a seedling may develop different fruit characteristics.
Establishing a young pawpaw: Plant the root ball in its permanent position without damaging the taproot. Water immediately and keep the soil evenly moist. Provide temporary light shading over young plants. Ensure mature trees receive enough sun and plant a genetically different selection for pollination.
Pollinating with a brush: Observe flowers on two genetically different trees. Collect loose pollen from a flower with mature anthers. Use a soft brush to apply it to receptive stigmas on the other tree. Label treated flowers to compare fruit set later; do not leave an excessive fruit load on young branches.
Allow space for the mature tree, not just the plant currently in the pot. The cultivar determines part of your fruit choice; the rootstock and tree form also help determine how much space the tree needs. Draw the crown, harvesting reach and support on your garden plan. Before buying, check whether a suitable pollinating partner is needed and whether one actually flowers nearby.
Where necessary, support a young tree with a suitable stake and a wide, soft tie. Do not let the tie rub or constrict the tree, and check it as the trunk and crown grow. Water must reach the root zone; a small wet patch on the surface does not tell you whether the rootball has enough moisture. Take care when planting and follow the species instructions for the correct planting depth.
Keep samples of the different cultivars separate. Record picking ripeness, eating ripeness, texture and the preparation you used. Fruit that tastes pleasant straight from the tree may behave differently in a pie or during storage. For perennial plants, your own flowering and harvest observations are more useful than a fixed countdown from the planting date.
