What do you want from your garden?
Loganberry combines a blackberry-like plant with long red fruit. A thornless selection makes picking more pleasant.

Choose a suitable spot
Train long shoots along strong wires; provide sun, shelter and good drainage.
From flower to fruit
How to give the plant a place
Shoots on wires: Place support before planting. Space young branches along the wires. Tie with soft, generous loops. Remove fruited wood after picking.
Fan against a wall: Fit sturdy wires. Train branches into a fan. Keep young replacement shoots identifiable. Pick along the clear front.
Care throughout the season
Remove canes that have fruited after harvest; retain new growth.

Follow your own harvest
Turn your space into a garden for experimenting
A row of bramble fruits becomes more attractive when you distribute the shoots deliberately. Put in a sturdy wire framework first and keep the harvest accessible from the path. Tie in with soft, roomy loops; lay different shoots alongside one another rather than making a thick bundle. This helps you find the fruit and makes removing the right canes later easier.
Distinguish young replacement shoots from wood that has already fruited. With summer raspberries and many bramble fruits, you want to retain new wood for a following harvest. Autumn raspberries need their own approach: do not automatically copy the pruning schedule for a summer cultivar. A photograph before pruning and a label by the plant help you remember what you did.
Choose for the time of eating too. A bowl of soft fruit eaten straight from the plant calls for something different from fruit for jam or a pie. Compare aroma, acidity and how the fruit comes away. A tayberry or loganberry is a different choice from a blackberry with an unusual name. Give these hybrids their own places so you can compare flavour and vigour fairly.
