Muscat is floral and aromatic; honey-like refers to the grower's perception of flavour. Distinguish table grapes from wine grapes; having few seeds does not guarantee seedlessness.
Warm, sunny and sheltered, with well-drained soil and sturdy support. A warm wall helps; a greenhouse provides extra warmth.
Do not promise or prescribe an additional pollinating partner without cultivar information. Flowering benefits from dry, airy conditions.
Grapes along a warm wall: Fit sturdy horizontal wires before planting. Plant beside the wall and train the main shoot upwards. Tie in with soft, roomy loops. Keep bunches airy and taste before picking.
A grapevine on a pergola: Check that the structure can carry mature wood and the harvest. Train a permanent trunk to the framework. Spread young shoots across the support. Prune annually according to the chosen system.
Train a permanent framework and prune annually; crowded bunches receive less light and air.
Taste berries from different parts of the bunch. Final ripening depends on warmth, position and season.
Save the variety, pot/open ground/greenhouse and training form. Follow bud break, flowering, bunch growth and tasting for ripeness.
A grape wall starts with support, not secateurs. Secure wires or a pergola firmly before the plant becomes large. Guide a young main shoot in the desired direction and tie it in with soft material. Leave space between wood and wire and check the loops as the shoot thickens. A tie that seems loose at planting can still constrict later.
Choose one training system and keep it recognisable. The permanent wood forms the framework; young shoots provide the green canopy and bear the bunches. Annual pruning is part of that system. A vine allowed to cover an entire pergola needs a different distribution from a narrow wall-trained plant. Give bunches light and air without stripping the plant at random.
Compare a Himrod described as honey-like with a pronounced Muscat grape and a cultivar with thinner skin. Taste berries from different parts of the bunch: one sweet berry does not prove everything is ready. Seedless, few-seeded and almost seedless are different descriptions. The amount of warmth a cultivar needs matters too; an attractive name does not make a cool, shady spot suitable.
Lakemont: White, seedless; sweet small berries.
Reliance: Red, seedless; early dessert grape.
Schuyler: Blue-black; dessert and wine grape.
Sovereign Coronation: Blue-purple, seedless; sweet musky aroma.
