Jenny: flavour and growing
Self-fertile; smaller, flavoursome fruit.

This image was created with AI from described plant characteristics and growing advice. It shows a possible situation and is not a photograph of a verified cultivar.
- Position
- Sunny, warm and sheltered; a sturdy pergola or wires. Protect vulnerable young growth from late frost.
- Pollination
- Jenny is zelfvruchtbaar. Hayward is vrouwelijk en heeft passend mannelijk pollen nodig, bijvoorbeeld Tormuri.
- Harvest
- Plants need time to establish; late fruit and late-summer warmth determine the result.

What do you want from your garden?
A pergola with kiwifruit is a perennial fruit space, with hairy fruits that ripen later in the season.

From flower to fruit
Jenny is zelfvruchtbaar. Hayward is vrouwelijk en heeft passend mannelijk pollen nodig, bijvoorbeeld Tormuri.
How to give the plant a place
Eetbare pergola: Plaats een stevige constructie. Kies zelfvruchtbaar ras of passend paar. Leid een blijvende stam omhoog. Verdeel en snoei zijgroei.
Kiwi als wandwaaier: Bevestig sterke draden. Leid takken in een platte waaier. Bind los zodat hout kan verdikken. Controleer late vorst bij uitloop.
Care throughout the season
Snoei en leid in zomer en winter; laat sterke groei niet de steun overbelasten.
Recognise the right time to pick
Plants need time to establish; late fruit and late-summer warmth determine the result.
Follow your own harvest
Record the fruiting plant and pollinator separately. Tormuri receives no fruit harvesting tasks.
Turn your space into a garden for experimenting
Design a sturdy climbing structure first. Kiwi and hardy kiwi produce vigorous growth; a thin cane is not a permanent framework. Train a trunk upwards and spread the selected framework branches along the support. Tie with loose, soft loops and check for constriction. Also leave a route clear for picking fruit and pruning the plant.
Pollination starts with the label. Record whether your plant is male, female or self-fertile and check that flowering periods match. A male plant is a useful pollinator but does not produce fruit itself. Where a name is used for both male and female selections, the sex must remain explicit. The same name on two pots alone does not prove the combination is suitable.
Distinguish kiwi from kiwi berry when tasting. Kiwi berries have small fruits with smooth, edible skin; an ordinary kiwi is picked and eaten differently. Give the plant time to build a framework and record actual flowering and ripening. The app can link the species to your garden, but a fixed number of days from planting does not reliably predict the first harvest from these perennial climbers.
Which flavour would you like to discover?
Jenny: Self-fertile; smaller, flavoursome fruit.
Hayward: Vrouwelijk; grote vruchten, late bloei.
Tormuri: Mannelijke bestuiver; geen eigen vruchten.
When and how should you prune?
Period for assessing pruning: jan · jul · aug. This is a seasonal window for a temperate garden in the northern hemisphere; check actual dormancy, growth and weather conditions.
Beoordeel in winterrust het raamwerk en vruchtbaar vervanghout. Leid en beperk sterke nieuwe groei in de zomer; behoud genoeg hout voor toekomstige bloemen en vruchten. Snoei niet blind alle jonge ranken weg.
A young plant needs shaping; an established one needs maintenance and gradual renewal. First consider which branches you want to keep. Use clean, sharp tools and avoid unnecessary large wounds. A pruning check does not mean cutting every time.
My vegetable garden shows a suitable check for confirmed pruning periods. A variety-specific period takes precedence over the general species period. Planned and finished crops receive no pruning task; no European calendar is applied without a confirmed location.
